Smiling, Caring and Learning Together on a Journey with God

Exciting hARRRRlf term!

Wow – what a busy and exciting half term we’ve had in Year 1! From wild animals to pirate ships, baby chicks to woodland adventures, we’ve packed in so many brilliant experiences and learned so much along the way. Here’s a look back at all the fun we’ve had…

We kicked things off with a fantastic Art Week. Everyone became an artist as we created two incredible pieces of art inspired by wild animals. We explored different materials and techniques and produced some amazing work that we were so proud to display at the Nyewood Art Gallery. It was wonderful to see our artwork on show for everyone to admire!

We started our exciting new topic all about Pirates, and what better way to begin than with a special Pirate Day! We enjoyed a jam-packed day full of pirate-themed fun. We got creative with junk modelling to make pirate ships, designed our very own pirate flags, and even read swashbuckling pirate stories. It was a fantastic way to dive into our learning!

We were so lucky to visit Early Years and meet the baby chicks they’ve been looking after. We watched them peck and chirp and learned all about how they hatch and grow. It was a lovely opportunity to learn about life cycles and how we care for living things.

A highlight of the half term was our adventure into the woodland area, where we discovered our brand new pond areas. We saw tadpoles and other wildlife and talked about the importance of looking after nature. We also learned a super exciting skill – how to start a fire using flint and steel!

In maths, we’ve been learning all about measures. We explored length, weight, capacity, and even had fun learning about money! We used real-life objects to compare and measure and began to understand how we use these skills every day.

In science, we found out what plants need to grow. We planted our own seeds and are observing them carefully to see how different conditions (like light and water) affect how they grow. We can’t wait to see what happens!

This half term we also celebrated a very special occasion – Nyewood Schools' 50th Anniversary! We had a brilliant party out on the field with music, dancing, and lots of smiling faces. We even had a very special visitor – the Mayor of Bognor – who joined us to help mark the celebration. It was a wonderful way to come together as a school and celebrate our community.

What an incredible half term it’s been! We’ve learned through play, exploration, and creativity – and most importantly, we’ve had so much fun doing it. Well done, Year 1! Let’s see what adventures the next half term brings…
