DAILY EXERCISE: You will be doing lots of exercise in mathematics today. So why not practise some different movements – hopping, jumping, skipping, star jumps, hop-scotch. How else could you move about?


PSED: Spiderman is going to help us with our mindfulness activity today. Ask your child to turn-on their “Spidey senses,” or the super-focused senses of smell, sight, hearing, taste, and touch that Spiderman uses to keep tabs on the world around him. This will encourage them to pause and focus their attention on the present, opening their awareness to the information their senses bring in (Karen Young, 2017).

This is a classic mindfulness exercise and encourages observation and curiosity—great skills for any human to practise.


Reading: Can you sing the alphabet?  Did you know you are saying the names of each letter?

Each letter makes a sound. Can you identify the letters by both name and sound?

You could use magnetic letters ask your grown up to create a bingo board or write the letters on the ground with chalk? Can your grown up name a letter for you to find? Can you make the sound? Why not ask them to say the sound and name the letter?

If you are really good at this, can you match upper case to lower case letters?


Writing: There are some words that we cannot use our sounds for and have to learn them by sight. Have a go at this game. Ask your grown up to click on Year 1, as you will be familiar with these words from your reading books. Look at the word; try to remember it before seeing if you can spell it yourself.


Mathematics: This week we are learning to measure short periods. What could you use to time yourself? A sand timer? A grown up’s phone? A stopwatch?                                                              

How many star jumps can you do in 30 seconds?                                                                    How many hops can you do in 30 seconds?                                                                             Did you do more hops or star jumps?                                                                                      Try again, can you do more this time? How do you know if you are getting faster of slower?
